Who is Monitoring the Types and Levels of Radiation Levels?  Heavily Controlled Media.

It is very difficult to obtain accurate information on the dangers from Fukushima radiation to residents of the West Coast of North America and Hawaii. The United States is not even monitoring radiation levels in the Pacific Ocean. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency tested fish exports from Japan for several months, but dropped the testing in June 2011, just three months after the disaster.  Japan, who has a long history of cover-ups, is trying to pass a bill to outlaw reporting on Fukashima.

Early testing indicated significant increases in radiation levels. While the levels were considered safe, the high amount could still have an impact on health and wellbeing. According to a conservative estimate 800 people could contract cancers from consuming radioactive fish and seaweed. Others put that number in the thousands. Without an accurate measurement of radiation it is unknown to what extent people will be affected.

People are being exposed to radiation without their knowledge. By covering the situation up governments are behaving unethically, leaving people in the dark about dangerous radiation levels in their food and environment. The amount of testing done by governments after the Fukushima leak has been minimal.

There are many problems in getting governments involved as well. Currently, there is no US agency that is responsible for the monitoring of oceanic radiation. Further problems with getting the US government to respond are increased budget cuts and lack of concern for what is happening. The government has predicted radiation levels to be low and does not see a reason to do additional testing. Increased testing is viewed as being an unnecessary expense.

The effect on the West Coast of the United States is projected to be minimal, but there will be a long-term effect on the population. People will have an increased risk of cancer and genetic defects from eating contaminated food. Even the low levels of radiation predicted will be harmful to the environment. Without accurate information it will be difficult to tell how far reaching the disaster is.

It is now up to citizens to measure and track radiation. Groups like the Radiation Network allow people to post daily readings of radiation from their Geiger counters. The readings can be used to determine the location and severity of radiation in an area. The site also includes a map of all current nuclear power plants. The readings provide a look into current radiation levels and changes over time.
